Col. Louis Miles Montgomery, Jr. (USAF Ret.)

Miles is a native of Mt. Pleasant, SC. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1982 where he served as an Aviation Electronics Technician and deployed on USS AMERICA (CV-66). He graduated from The University of South Carolina in 1988, was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force in 1989, and served in the aircraft maintenance, munitions, personnel, communications, civil engineering, and logistics career fields. He retired after 37 years of military service in the Navy and Air Force, and later retired from civilian service at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. Miles and his wife, Lieutenant Colonel Joann Montgomery, Canadian Army (Ret.), now reside in Beaufort, SC. He is a descendent of 1st Lt. John Allen Miles who was a member of the Charleston Light Dragoons, served in the 4th Brigade, S.C. Calvary, Butlers Brigade, Hampton's Division, and was killed in action at The Battle of Haws Shop, VA on 28 May 1864.

Col. Alfred Crawford Channels, Jr. (USA Ret.)

Known as Fred, born and raised in Cumberland County New Jersey, arrived at Parris Island Recruit Depot in July 1962 after finishing high school. An extensive military career covering 40 plus years saw him serve in the Army National Guard and on active duty with the US Army, retiring as a Colonel, Filed Artillery, in 2000. During this time he earned a BS Degree and a Master of Public Administration. Following were several years as a Government Contractor and Civil Service employee until 2008 when voluntarily recalled back to active service and finally retiring to Lady's Island, SC in 2017. Currently a docent and member of the Living History Detachment at Parris Island, a trained docent of the Beaufort History Museum and active Board Member, Friends of Fort Freemont. Having met Compatriot Col. Harold Mills though JROTC Award presentations at local high schools, Fred was encouraged to join the Camp and was installed on the 6th of March under the service of his Great Grandfather Pvt. Levi Henry Hughes, Co. E, 2nd South Carolina Cavalry Regiment.

Raymond E. Griffith, Jr.

November 2022

Raymond was born and raised in Hopewell, VA, moving to nearby Chester, VA as an adult. He worked in Chemical Manufacturing his entire Career, retiring from Ashland Chemical in 2018 with 43 years service. Once his wife Carol retired, they moved to Hardeeville, SC where a friend introduced him to the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Raymond officially joined Camp 47 in November 2022 under his Confederate Ancestor, 2nd Great Grandfather, Private Nathaniel Alexander Griffith, 3rd Regiment, Virginia Calvary. In his spare time Raymond is an avid golfer and pickle ball player.

Jeffrey Scott Light

Jeff's Confederate Ancestor was Bg. General William Randolph Terry, Stonewall Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. He rose through the officer ranks and in 1864, by both attrition and merit, became the commanding officer of a consolidated brigade which included the remnants of the Stonewall Brigade.

Wilson Ashby McElveen III

Wilson was born in Sumter, SC and is a 1982 graduate of Clemson University with a BS degree in Administrative Management. Since 1984 he has been employed in the Mortgage Lending business. He is married to the former Miss Sharon Aimar of Beaufort, SC and has two daughters. Living in Columbia for almost 35 years, he and Sharon returned to Beaufort in 2021. His Confederate Ancestor was Pvt. Robert Marion Thompson, Co. D, 2nd Infantry, 2nd Palmetto Regiment of South Carolina.

Jim was initially accepted into the Sons of Confederate Veterans on June 24, 2020, his installation delayed due to COVID until officially installed on December 6th, 2021. His Confederate Ancestor was Pvt. Lemuel Micajah Pope, Company B, Cox's Battalion, Tennessee Cavalry.

William "Spencer" James

Spencer was bon in Bowie, MD and moved to Baltimore at age six with family. He attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore Campus, majoring in Chemistry but found his passion for the “family” business, construction/hydraulic crane operation, which both his father and grandfather had championed for many decades. He married Ruth Hickman-James in 1971 and they have one son, Kevin. In 2016 they relocated to Beaufort upon retirement, now residing in The Haven community. Spencer was accepted into the Sons of Confederate Veterans in August of 2021 and installed on November 1st ,his Confederate Ancestor was Pvt. Benjamin Franklin Mills, Company K, 47th Infantry Regiment of Virginia.

C. Wayne Gaabo

Born in Arlington and raised in Roanoke, Virginia. Wayne relocated to Edisto Island, South Carolina with his wife Jamie in 2002. A Civil Engineering graduate of North Carolina State University in 1973 he was involved in Construction Management for twenty years before owning Tee It Up Discount Golf. Later attended the Culinary Institute of Charleston and owned At Your Service catering on Edisto Island. While in Edisto he joined the 3rd SC Cavalry, Co. I, SCV Camp #131 under his Confederate Ancestor Pvt. William Allison Friend, Co. G, 50th Virginia Infantry Regiment. Wayne and Jamie moved to Latitude Margaritaville Hilton Head in August of 2020 and officially transferred into Camp #47 on May 14, 2021.

Michael "Mike" Gorman

A lawyer by trade, Mike has spent the last ten years travelling among three continents for his professional adventures in international commerce. Residing in Beaufort along with his wife Natalie, he has recently settled in South Carolina, of which he retains fond memories of regular visits during his childhood. His Confederate Ancestor was Cpl. Charles John William Breland, Co. I, 11th South Carolina Infantry Regiment. He is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin, the University of Mississippi and the University of Kentucky.

Harold transferred to the Camp after having been a member of the Lt. Gen. Wade Hampton Camp in Columbia, SC. Retired from the US Air Force as a Colonel serving in Intelligence, he is a Viet Nam Veteran. His Confederate Ancestor was Corp. William Ross Whitesides, 17th SC Infantry Regiment. He is the author of the book "The Confederate Secret Service - An Analysis of the Intelligence Community of the Confederate States of America, 1861-1865".

Steven transferred to the South Carolina Division and Gen. Richard H. Anderson Camp # 47 after having been a member of the Miss Constance Cary Camp #1913 in Gloversville, NY. He retired from the US Army as a Colonel and private practice after 41 years of experience as a periodontist. He and wife Susan are residing in Beaufort full time. His Confederate Ancestor was Pvt. Shadrach Allen, Co D, 29th Virginia Infantry Regiment Capt. Jeffress' Co., Virginia Light Artillery (Virginia Nottoway Light Artillery) and Co. E & G, 4th Virginia Reserves.

Clif was born and raised in Beaufort, a graduate of the BHS Tidal Wave Class of 65. A US Army Veteran, he served in 1968-69 with the Old Guard at Fort Myer, VA. He later formed his own CPA business in the financial district of San Francisco and resides in Beaufort part time. His Confederate Ancestor was Pvt. A. L. Calhoun of Co. G, 23rd Regiment, SC Infantry, Hatch's Coast Rangers.

Peter was born and raised in Chillicothe, Missouri. He graduated from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia in 1972. Following graduation he was commissioned a Naval Ensign and later designated a Naval Flight Officer, serving three years in Aircraft Ferry Squadron Three One (VRF-31). Peter graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, Law School while continuing to serve his country in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He retired in 2001 from the Naval Reserve as a Commander and practiced law with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) until his retirement in 2014, relocating to Beaufort with his wife Mary. His Confederate Ancestor is Capt. John W. Jacobs of Shelby County, Missouri, Company F of the 4th Missouri Cavalry.

Mike is a recent SCV Transfer who was born and raised in Washington, DC and teaches criminology online. He served for 25 years in law enforcement and is a graduate of the American University and George Washington University. A former Commander of the Capt. Jack Adams Camp, (SCV) Edinburg, VA and a trustee for Our Soldiers Cemetery (Confederate), Mt. Jackson, VA. He and wife, Ann, live on Lady's Island and maintain the ancestral home of his confederate great-grandfather, Jobe Nesselrodt, Private, Company K, 7th Virginia Calvary in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

On the 193rd anniversary of the birth of Lt. General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, Cadet "MJ" Kelley was installed as the Camp's seventh cadet member during the Camp's 11th Annual Lee - Jackson Banquet. He was born in October of 2015 in Beaufort to Commander Mike Kelley and wife Stephanie, he has an older sister Emma. His Confederate Ancestor is Private Jesse N. Cornwell, Co. A, 114th Virginia Militia.

James Peyton Atkins, III

A retired Marine Corps Reserve lieutenant colonel, Jim worked mostly in the commercial and military aviation industry and was the CEO of a radio signal processing company and Pres/COO of a chemical products corporation. His final professional effort was as the founder of a real estate firm. Transferring from Virginia's Camp #21, Jim's direct Confederate Ancestor is Pvt. William B. Atkins, 45th Virginia Infantry, whose three brothers died in service with the 24th and 42nd Virginia Infantry Regiments. One of those brothers charged against the Federal lines with Pickett at Gettysburg, and was wounded, captured, and is buried in Savannah after a prisoner exchange in late 1864. Another was killed in May 1864 at the Mule Shoe at Spotsylvania Court House.

Mike was born in Maryland, and enlisted in the Marine Corps following high school, serving as an Air Traffic Controller at MCAS Beaufort, SC. He and his wife Stephanie, a Spanish teacher at Beaufort High School, reside in Beaufort with their daughter Emma (12 ½), and son MJ (6 months). Mike also coaches the AFJROTC Drill Team at Beaufort School. His Confederate Ancestor is Private Jesse N. Cornwell, Co. A, 114th Virginia Militia. Mike is active in many hereditary societies, and serves as an officer in several.

Miller has been a Cadet since shortly after his birth on August 7, 2011 in Atlanta, GA. He is the grandson of past Commander Jody Henson and son of Dave and Priscilla Henson Caselli of Smyrna, GA. Seen receiving his Cadet Pin from his Grandfather at his first official meeting, Miller ( 4 1/2 yrs old) entered the SCV under his maternal Confederate Ancestor Pvt. Hibben Leland of McClellanville, SC. Pvt Leland was with Manigault's Brigade, South Carolina Pee Dee Light Artillery which he joined at the age of 16.

Tom is a native of Augusta, Georgia, spending most of his younger days on the golf course. He graduated from The Citadel, as did his father, grandfather, and both sons in law. After just over a year in the Air Force, as Base Disaster Preparedness Officer at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, S.C. Tom returned home and began a twenty nine year career in highway related construction. Retiring in 2001, Tom and his wife Kay, moved to Beaufort where they and their family own and operate Port Royal Landing Marina. Tom's Confederate ancestor is Major William Theodore Lesesne, Co. C, (Manning Guards), Hampton's Legion. Tom is also a member of Beaufort's Gov. Paul Hamilton Chapter SAR along with many other camp members.

Craig is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. He served in the United States Marine Corps as a field artillery officer ending his service as a Captain. His extensive research has located five Great Great Grandfathers who served the Confederacy as well as a Third Great Grandfather and many great uncles. One of whom received the Southern Cross of Honor in 1906. He and wife Lynn reside on Hilton Head Island. He entered the SCV under Ancestor Capt. David Marion Russell, Co. B., 4th South Carolina Regt., Palmetto Sharpshooters.

Bill is a Beaufort native and graduate of the Beaufort High Tidal Wave Class of 1958. After graduating from the Citadel in 1962 he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the United States Marine Corps, served in Vietnam, and was discharged a Captain in 1965. Afterward, Bill served as a Licensed Harbor Pilot in Charleston for forty years before retiring to his home town with wife Paula. His Confederate Ancestor was 1st Lt. William Waight Elliott, Co. K, Second Palmetto Guard, South Carolina Infantry. One of the original members of our predecessor the Lt. Gen. Richard H. Anderson United Confederate Veterans Camp formed here in Beaufort in 1897.

David grew up in South West Virginia, where his family still resides in Bristol. After high school he joined the Bristol Virginia Sheriff's Department as a deputy sheriff. In 1985 David joined the United States Air Force where he spent 6 years stationed at Charleston Air force Base. During that time he supported and participated in operation Just Cause (Panama). After his military service, David went to work for Pearlstine Distributors, an Anheuser Bush Wholesaler in Charleston and Beaufort South Carolina. David worked 23 years at Pearlstine, where he was the Sales Director for five counties in southern South Carolina. David is now employed by the Department of Defense in Beaufort South Carolina and resides in Rincon Georgia with his wife Cindy and son Tater. His Confederate Ancestor was 1st Sgt. Peter H. Leonard, 63rd Virginia Infantry Regiment.

Born in Clinton, SC, Rick is our first member to be related to Camp namesake Lt. Gen. Richard H. Anderson (note his full name). Graduating from Clinton High School in 1960, the former captain of the football team, he interrupted his college career to serve in the U.S.Marines. He later graduated from Presbyterian College in 1966 with a BA in Psychology where he was also a Kappa Alpha fraternity member. He then went on to receive a Masters in Counseling from the University of Florida. He currently resides with his wife, Linda, in Greenville and has been involved in the insurance business for well over 40 years, currently with State Farm.

David was born in Washington, DC in 1947 and graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a BA in 1970. Later he received his JD from Michigan State University and an MBA from the University of Michigan. After practicing corporate law in Detroit he became involved in real estate in several states and areas including DC and Virginia before moving to Naples, Florida in 2003. His mother was a Barnwell of Beaufort descent and he is the first of her line to return home to the family's original roots, having moved to Beaufort in 2012. He is also a member of the loacl SAR chapter.

David's ancestor was Maj. John Gibbes Barnwell II, Chief Ordnance Officer, Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia.

The Three cadets are grandsons of Compatriot Hazen Culley and wife Jane,  Sam and Jack are the sons of Carole Jefferies and live in Atlanta, William resides in Beaufort and is the son of Prior and Cardra Rooney. The cadets ancestor was Sgt. Gilbert L. Ijams, Co. G 31st Tenneessee Infantry.

Son of US Army Inf. Col who served in WWII, Tom was born and raised in Starke, FL. Served in the US Army during the Cold War as a Lt. and is a graduate of Florida State University. Worked for AT&T for 25 years, retiring to the Nantahala Mountains in North Carolina in 1993. Tom is a driver assisting DAV patients and is also a member of the local SAR Chapter. He is a descendant of Sgt. John Wright Patterson, Co. A, 57th Regiment Georgia Infantry.

Bob was born in Orange, CA to the son of a career Marine Aviator. His military dependant travels brought him through Beaufort in 1963, stamping the lowcountry on his heart. A Universtiy of Florida graduate with US Marine Corps and Central Intelligence service, he later worked for IBM and in the securities market in Jacksonville, Florida with Merrill Lynch where he currently resides. He is a descendant of Lt. Calvin Morgan Smith, Co. D, 39th Tennessee Mounted Infantry.

Chris is a South Carolina native and the son of Compatriot Frank Gibson. Raised and educated in Beaufort, one of his teachers and coaches at Beaufort Academy was Commander Paul Griffin. A Citadel graduate and the father of two young children, son Duncan and daughter Grace. He and wife Wendy reside in Walling Grove and he is associated locally with Lowcountry Insurance Service. He is a descendant of Pvt. John E. Gardner, Stallings 8th Bn, South Carolina Reserves.

Maj. Robert Ellis de Treville (USA Ret)

Robert is a local native whose ancestors trace back to Beaufort prior to the Revolutionary War. He and wife Karen, an RN, returned to Beaufort several years ago after Robert completed his 22 year military career including seven years in Naval enlisted ranks and retiring as a Maj. in the Army Medical Service Corps. He is a veteran of Desert Storm/Shield, Haiti and Bosnia. Their two children, Annie and Thomas, are both officers in the Army Medical Service Corps.
He is a descendant of Lt. Col. Robert de Treville, commander 1st S.C. Infantry (Regulars), who was killed during the battle of Averasboro, NC, March 1865.

Bob and wife Nan have lived full time on Dataw for three years having acquired the property in 1989. Bob was a Chief Executive Officer in the magazine printing business in Pennsylvania for many years prior to permanently residing on Dataw. Both he and Nan have deep Southern roots. He is a descendant of Brigadier General Victor Jean Baptiste Girardey, promoted to BG General from Captain at age 27 for conspicuous gallantry during Gen. Mahone's counterattack in the Battle of the Crater.

Andy is a member of Beaufort's First Presbyterian Church and a Life Member of the National Eagle Scout Association. He a retired executive for a global industrial equipment manufacturer currently pursuing his doctorate. He is a descendant of Sgt. Andrew Jackson Beall, Co. B, 3rd Bn., Georgia Infantry and 37th Georgia Infantry.

He taught at Beaufort Academy for twelve years until 1996 and lives with his wife Sharon on Lady's Island. He is a descendant of Pvt. Born in Kentucky, Jesse says he has been a "seed man" nearly all his life, his family owning a seed business in Paducah when growing up. Many know him as the owner of "For the Birds & Garden" for a number of years in the Beaufort and Bluffton areas and he was responsible for the development of the Fordham Market. With business in Mount Pleasant, Charleston, Myrtle Beach and Writesville Beach (NC), he and wife Suzanne are on the road quite a bit. He is a descendant of Sgt Jesse W. Bean, Co. B, 36th Virginia Infantry.

He and his wife Alice live in Bull Point in Seabrook. He is a descendant of Pvt. Michael McDuffy Wilson, Co. E, 34th Regt., Georgia Volunteer Infantry.
