SCV SOUTH CAROLINA DIVISION
JUNIOR ROTC
H.L. HUNLEY AWARD

In 2007, the South Carolina Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans organized and developed an award designed to honor top high school Marine and Naval ROTC cadets across the state who displayed core values of the Navy and Marine Corps - Honor, Courage and Commitment, as did the ill-fated crew of the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley off the coast of Charleston on Feb 17th, 1864. In 2007 Camp Compatriot Marine SSGT Jeff Holliday presented the inaugural award to Cadet Richard Abercrombie at SSGT Holliday's high school alma mater, Battery Creek High School, Beaufort, SC. In 2008 the SC Division extended the scope of the award to additionally include Army and Air Force JROTC Cadets at the request of those military branches. The award went Nation Wide a year later. Beginning in 2007, SCV Camp 47 sponsored the following high school JROTC Units in Beaufort County: Battery Creek HS, US Marine Corps; Beaufort HS, US Air Force; Bluffton HS, US Army; Hilton Head Island HS, US Navy; and Whale Branch Early College HS, US Marine Corps. Additionally the Camp sponsored, for two years, Marine Corps Units in two Jasper County High Schools in Ridgeland prior to their merger and presented awards to top cadets at the Marine Military Academy, Harlingen, Texas.

Due to the decision of the United States Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Army to remove the Sons of Confederate Veterans from the approved ribbons/awards chart, sadly they have penalized our best students and future Marines, Sailors, Airman and Soldiers who fervently displayed core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. No awards have been accepted by Beaufort County schools since the beginning of 2021. However, the history of this award and its recipients shall remain a part of this website until decisions are reversed by our government and it's military leaders.
